Opening up spheres of the economy is not a reason for complacency

The Greek government and experts are concerned about the picture of a sharp weakening of the compliance with the measures of protection against coronavirus by citizens, starting on Friday, when the quarantine was lifted.

“The opening up of economic spheres is not yet a matter of complacency,” government officials say, adding that citizens need to leave their homes, go shopping, sit in cafes or taverns, travel abroad or to a nearby destination. However, for some, the pandemic seems to have ended with the reopening of tourism. Although this is not at all the case.

Negligence and disregard for sanitary measures such as overcrowding in cafes and bars, wearing masks, and disrupting distancing leads to the risk of spreading covid. Experts are sounding the alarm as the coronavirus remains active in the population.

Control measures and penalties for non-compliance with protective measures
In order not to retreat to the positions of tough measures left behind, especially now that the economy has started to work again and the country is gradually returning to normal life, verification mechanisms will be strengthened.

We remind you that the use of a mask remains mandatory indoors (at work, in shops, etc.), outdoors, as well as in cars. There is a fine for violators. Restricted hours from 00:30 to 5:00 remain in effect.

Avoid visiting areas where harsh measures (“red zones” with local restrictions) are still followed.
Experts are concerned about the risk of the spread of new mutations of the coronavirus, calling for special attention to residents and visitors to avoid local restrictions, as in the case of Kalymnos, as well as the extension of special restrictive measures until Monday 24-05-2021.

Checks and penalties on Saturday 15/05
On Saturday, 72,911 inspections were carried out by the competent audit services (police, coast guard, regional and municipal authorities, etc.), during which 278 violations were registered.

Fines totaling € 151,400 were imposed, five arrests were made, and eight companies were suspended for fifteen (15) days, according to the official report.

The Greek police carried out the bulk of the checks – 56,736. Principal offenses:

Failure to use a mask and failure to maintain a distance. Lack of a certificate for movement (required for presentation during the traffic ban hours from 00:30 to 5:00). Police activity will be intensified. At the same time, government sources emphasize that the opening of the market and events can lead to an increase in the number of infected.
