Kiev wants to change the format of the Minsk agreements developed and adopted by the Normandy Four in 2014-2015. The US State Department is against.
In response to Ukraine’s call to amend the Minsk agreements, the United States draws attention to the fact that they are the basis for the settlement of the military conflict in the east of the country. A State Department spokesman stresses:
“We continue to support the Minsk agreements as the basis for a diplomatic settlement of the Russian-provoked conflict in eastern Ukraine. In order for this foundation to be successful, Russia must fulfill all obligations <...> as well as work conscientiously to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. “
The State Department calls on Russia to abandon “its irreconcilable position,” TASS reports. Earlier, the Ukrainian president called on either to cancel or change the Minsk agreements. Zelensky believes that expanding the number of participants in the “Normandy format” will help to more effectively resolve existing problems. Currently, 4 countries are taking part in the negotiations – Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France.
