Student rallies were dispersed by the police

Massive protest rallies took place in Athens and Thessaloniki and other cities in Greece. Protesters demanded that universities be open to students and teachers and closed to police. The police used batons and tear gas, and there are two wounded.

The education community is demanding that the government abandon the law requiring police to be stationed in university institutions, although the Ministry of Citizens’ Protection has postponed its plans for September and will not send police officers in April, even to five previously announced universities.

“Education is impossible with the police and violence” and “N.D. and Kerameos, listen carefully, this law will remain on paper ”- these are the slogans of the protesters in Athens, who arrived at the parliament, where they lit smoke bombs.

Shortly after the march in Athens, about 200 people marched towards the Polytechnio, where tensions arose between the protestors and the police. It is noted that the police attacked the protesters with tear gas.

According to the police statement: “After the end of the march, a group of about 200 people walked along Patision Street towards the National Technical University of Athens and tried to enter it. This attempt was prevented by the police stationed.

“The aforementioned group of people then went through Alexandras and Mavromatayon avenues behind the Athens University of Economics and Business and tried to infiltrate the university, but were pushed back by the police to avoid further escalation.”

Two wounded in Thessaloniki

A massive demonstration took place in the northern capital – Thessaloniki. It began at the monument to Venizelos and ended at the building of the Aristotle University. During the rally, incidents occurred between radical protesters and police officers who used tear gas in response to attacks with Molotov Cocktails.

During the incidents, a bottle of Molotov cocktail fell next to a protester while police tried to immobilize him in order to arrest him, causing flames to burn his leg. First aid was provided on the spot, and then he was taken by an EKAB ambulance to the hospital, according to APE-MPE.

According to the police, “the protester was arrested because he had already thrown Molotov cocktails, he was taken to the AHEPA hospital, and another Molotov cocktail was found on him. for first aid “.

The incidents continued later in Egnatia, when protesters blocked one lane of the street near the university with garbage cans and started throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at the police from the courtyard of the Theological School. A parked car was burned and several other vehicles were damaged.

Students and professors say “No” to the university police, as well as other changes in the law on higher education, including restricting access to it and establishing a minimum admission base, which affects the future of dozens of faculties and entire educational institutions, thousands of candidates and calls for the opening of schools with all measures to combat Covid-19 and urge to continue the fight until the law is repealed.

Universal rallies were held today in many cities of the country, from Crete to Patras, Ioannina, Karditsa, Komotini, Alexandroupolis and other places.
