Citing sources, CNN reports on the plans of the administration of US President Joe Biden to expel Russian diplomats – such an action implies new sanctions. The TV channel talks about the details.
As part of the new sanctions, the Biden administration intends to expel diplomats from the Russian embassies in New York and Washington. They will have 30 days to move home, according to newsru.com. The measures taken are coordinated with allies from Europe, and sanctions are coordinated with the Treasury and the US Department of State. Representatives of the latter have already called for a willingness to resist the Russian Federation’s retaliatory measures, which are likely to be delayed.
However, Interfax journalists have not yet been able to get a comment on the possibility of such a development of events from the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov. He advised the representatives of the publication not to rush things and wait for the official announcement of the decision, simultaneously noting Russia’s attitude to the sanctions actions in general:
It is clear that there is no smoke without fire, most likely, we are talking about some kind of “leaks” in American newspapers. For now, of course, we will not comment on newspaper reports. Still, we will wait if any specific decisions are announced from official Washington. Of course, we would not like to act according to this Leninist formula in our bilateral relations: “one step forward, two steps back.
Bloomberg and Reuters reported earlier that restrictive measures will be introduced in response to alleged actions by the Russian Federation, including cyberattacks through SolarWinds software and attempts to interfere in the American elections. Officially, the White House’s decision may be announced tonight.
