Traffic accident in Gavdos: the girl was conscious for a long time, she could have been saved

A resident of the island of Gavdos said that the student, who died on the island as a result of a car falling from a cliff, remained conscious for quite a long time and, probably, if help arrived earlier, she could have been saved.

The young student of the Technical University of Crete, who died in a car accident in Gavdos, is grieved not only by the public of the island, but also by many citizens far beyond its borders.

Local postman Efi Georgaka gave an interview to Zarpa Radio 89.6, telling the details of the tragedy: “What happened is terrible. We experienced this firsthand and realized once again that we are in the power of God. When something happens, there are big obstacles and delays. “

“She was conscious”
As the woman said in a radio broadcast, the accident happened at about 03:00 am, but “we only found out about it at 06:00 in the morning. The driver managed to climb the cliff and warn about the accident. The girl was still alive. By 10 o’clock in the morning, she was not only conscious, but also spoke normally. For about 5 hours she expected to receive help, but alas … “.

“We did everything we could here, but on the other hand, why did so many hours pass, because the weather was very good and the rescuers could well have come from the sea?” – Ms. Georgaka asks. “EMAK arrived with the Coast Guard at 13:00. We were informed that there was no helicopter in Crete and we were asked for the aircraft to arrive from Athens to pick up the injured driver. The already deceased girl was not even approached … ”, – adds a local resident who witnessed.

Ms. Georgaka continued: “Of course, when help came, people gave their all, did everything they could, going down to such a hard-to-reach place like this cliff. But rescuers could arrive from the port at 07:30, right after the accident became known. Yes, the sea here is not suitable for the passage of a boat. But if people arrived in an inflatable boat, they would probably have time to free the girl from the crumpled car, provide her with first aid and save her life. But she waited too long for help … and didn’t wait. ”

We will remind, as previously wrote “Russian Athens”, early in the morning on Sunday 11/04, a tragedy occurred on the island of Gavdos: a car fell into the abyss, a young woman died.

The car, in which the man and the woman were traveling, fell off a cliff. According to the website Flash News, during a car accident, the man was thrown out of the car, he was hospitalized with injuries.

According to the information, the accident occurred on the road from Kastri to the village of Vatsiana, located in the south of the island. The car fell into a cliff from a height of several meters.

To provide first aid, doctors, firefighters and local residents rushed to the scene of the car accident. A helicopter with EMAK special forces flew to the island. The doctor and rescuers managed to get down from the cliff to where the car got stuck. Alas, having gone downstairs, experts state the death of the student. She was reportedly not a permanent resident of the island, and her companion has long lived here.

According to the information, the sharp turn of the road, on which the accident occurred, is especially dangerous and does not have markings or protective fences. At one time, the authorities here made a mound of rubble for safety. But, as you can see, in this case it did not help to avoid the tragedy. However, after investigation it turned out that the couple was in the car with the handbrake on. At some critical moment, he refused, and the car fell down.

Who is she, the victim of an accident in Gavdos?

The young student of the Technical University of Crete, who died in a car accident in Gavdos, is grieved not only by the public of the island, but also by many citizens far beyond its borders.

A 25-year-old student, originally from Kerkyra, chose this remote island for life and creative work. About a year ago, in July 2020, Corina presented her research paper entitled “Alternative Tourism: A Methodology for Creating an Environmentally Friendly Ecotourism Site in Gavdos” via a teleconference at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete.

This is what she did when she arrived on the “island of her dreams.” In her research work, the student wrote: “I am researching the phenomenon of tourism. I believe that in connection with the quality of life, as well as respect for humans and the environment, it becomes necessary to combine ecology and design as auxiliary concepts of the construction canons. The idea of the study is based on the application of these parameters in the design and construction of eco-friendly housing for ecotourism, small in size and consisting mostly of natural materials available in Gavdos. “

However, the girl’s plans were not destined to come true. One day, while in a parked car with a 40-year-old resident of the island, she died – the car in an incomprehensible way fell off a cliff. According to the authorities, the car was put on the handbrake, but at some point it refused, and tragedy struck.

An architectural student of the Technical University of Crete died instantly, and her companion managed to jump out of the car at the last moment, and he received numerous injuries.

According to local media reports, the car that fell into the abyss was found by a passing driver, and the authorities were notified of this. The girl’s body was rescued from the crumpled car by rescuers EMAK and delivered to Chania by helicopter. The man was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated.

“On behalf of the City Council, we express our deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased. God grant that there are no other victims of car accidents on our island, ”the local authorities said in a statement.
