Research has shown that antibodies to coronavirus can be passed from mother to child, euronews reports.
Alexander Gintsburg, Director of the Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after V.I. Gamalei of the Ministry of Health of Russia. Earlier, American scientists came to similar conclusions, who conducted studies with the participation of 130 women who received the Moderna or Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. Specialists include researchers from Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Ragon Institute, Brigham and Women’s Clinic in Boston. Ragon Institute Fellow Galit Alter says:
We now have clear evidence that coronavirus vaccines help develop immunity that will protect babies too. Developers must realize that pregnancy is a special immunological condition in which two lives can be saved with a powerful vaccine.
The mother passes on protective immunity to her baby through the placenta, and after birth, through breastfeeding. And this is great news for all pregnant women who are now outside of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The laboratory director at the Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology, Andrea Adlou, says, evaluating the study:
Filling information gaps with real data is key – especially for our pregnant patients, who are at increased risk of complications from COVID-19.
As you know, the disease caused by the coronavirus is especially difficult in expectant mothers, especially in the third trimester of pregnancy, besides, increasing the risk of its unfavorable course. After infection, such women are more likely to end up in intensive care and require connection to a ventilator.
However, pediatricians warn that the data is still insufficient. Scientists have to find out how high-quality protection antibodies provide to the newborn and urge the scientific community to conduct research with a more representative sample.
