Great Britain: protests and threats over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad

A teacher from a school in the British city of Batley, who showed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a religious studies lesson, was threatened with cruel retribution, according to The Telegraph.

On March 22, the teacher showed cartoons of the prophet from Charlie Hebdo magazine. The school administration called his actions unacceptable.

Several dozen people, including the parents of schoolchildren, protested, expelling threats. And the teacher, temporarily suspended from work, sits at home and is nervous in anticipation of the assassination attempt. In addition, he is afraid that he will no longer be able to return to his professional duties.

Family members of the teacher say that numerous groups of young extremists have already come to their house several times, so his fears are not groundless. Both the administration of the educational institution and the police are in no hurry to provide him with protection. The teacher himself fears that he may well share the fate of Samuel Pati, a history teacher beheaded in France. The father of the school teacher says:

How can he go back to Batley Grammar School? It would be too risky. And how will he walk around the city with his children, doing his usual business, knowing that he could be killed? Unfortunately, his life here at Batley is over. “

In October 2020, 18-year-old Chechen Abdulakh Anzorov beheaded Pati over his lecture with caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. He shared videos and photos of the massacre on social networks. Later, the terrorist was shot, and French President Macron called the incident a terrorist attack. According to the French leader, the deceased teacher “taught children freedom of speech, freedom to believe or not to believe.”
